The Risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We know that AI has arrived to change the way many things are done. It has become an increasingly indispensable tool for users, to the extent that it is now considered part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, alongside robotics, nanotechnology, and cloud computing. AI has significantly enhanced efficiency, productivity, decision-making, and the ability to read and predict user preferences and choices through algorithmic patterns derived from searches and visualizations. These capabilities help capture user attention, identify patterns and early signs of diseases, and much more.

These technological marvels have led to great advancements and conveniences. However, they also cast a shadow over the darker side of AI, resulting from its misuse. AI has expanded the tools available for criminal activities. It can replicate and produce images, create fabricated video scenarios of events that never occurred, and generate audio or audiovisual material capable of deceiving those who are exposed to it.

This is evident on social media, where AI-generated videos and images depict non-existent living species or animals acting unnaturally. Under these posts, people often comment with surprise, believing the content to be real. Similarly, Facebook profiles display photos of attractive men or women posing as real individuals, yet these people do not actually exist. The first victims of such deception are often those with limited contact or understanding of technology — primarily older adults or individuals with less formal education. However, as AI continues to evolve and improve itself, the time may come when distinguishing between reality and AI-generated content in the virtual world becomes increasingly difficult.

AI can now compose songs, write stories, poems, letters, and even code for software development. These impressive creations capture people's attention. Without realizing it, through casual use and experimentation — asking it to mimic our voices or create videos of us interacting with our favorite celebrities — we may eventually face a reality where we receive a phone call with the voice of a family member pleading for help, claiming to have been kidnapped. Or we might receive a video of ourselves seemingly committing a crime, with a demand for money to prevent the footage from being made public. Likewise, a friend could receive a phone call with our voice asking to borrow money.

As technology evolves, security measures must also improve. Not only should virtual security be enhanced, but laws also need to be updated to avoid falling behind when it comes to crimes involving the misuse of Artificial Intelligence.
